How to deep clean your bathroom: the secrets exposed

Spring has sprung on Vancouver Island!

It’s time to start spring cleaning and I can’t tell you how excited we are for this! Don’t share our passion? Give us a call and let us tackle it for you. If you’d rather tackle it yourself but don’t know where to begin; don’t worry. We will break it down for you over the next couple blog posts. The first one will be deep cleaning/spring cleaning of the bathroom.

We know it can seem overwhelming to do a complete spring cleaning in your house. Where do you even start? The first thing you should remember is to break the house up room by room. It is most effective to start upstairs so that as you dust everything comes down. Let’s start with your bathroom.

  1. Before you begin, you should put the garbage can and bathmats/towels outside of the bathroom. If you haven’t recently washed the bathmats and towels just throw them straight into the wash. If you haven’t recently cleaned your garbage cans or you don’t use a bag, then throw the garbage out and fill the can with water to let it soak.
  2. If you have lots of light from windows, try to leave your bathroom lights off until you’ve cleaned them. Grab the vacuum and vacuum everything in your bathroom. If you have extremely dusty bathtubs or toilets you can try and vacuum some of that dust up too before getting started. Don’t forget to vacuum the bathroom fan and behind the toilet.
  3. Spray down the fixtures with your cleaning solution. I recommend PINK cleaning solution. Let them start to soak while you begin your clean.
  4. Grab your bucket with disinfectant and water in it. Grab your microfibre cloths (no need to waste paper towels!)
  5. Start in the bathroom with the door closed. Use a step ladder if you need to and start at the top of the door frame. Wipe down the entire door frame and back of the door and door handle. Once you’ve done this open the door and wipe down the rest of the door frame and around the door hinges. Step back inside the bathroom and face the door again. Now move to the right. Start as high as you can reach and wipe down everything including the walls of the bathroom, towel rack, baseboards.
  6. When you reach the toilet scrub the inside first. Make sure to get under the rim of the toilet. Use a scrub brush to get around the screw covers on the bottom of the toilet and around the screw covers that hold the seat on. If you have the kind that open, pop them open and give them a clean. If you have the kind of toilet seat that pops off, then pop it off for a more complete clean. Wipe entire toilet from top to bottom with wet cloth and then with a dry cloth to get remainder of dust and dirt off. Put those cloths into the wash. Sterilize and disinfect toilet handle.
  7. When you reach your stand-up shower, you will have to get into the shower. Bring your cleaning solution, scrubbing tools, scrub brush and squeegee. Start by wetting the shower. Use your cleaning solution and spray the entire shower done. Now use your sponge or other scrubbing tool to scrub down entire shower. Yes, you do need to scrub down your tile walls too not just the glass ones. Scrub until the soap scum is gone. Now grab your scrub brush and scrub the grout between the tiles. If you have stubborn soap scum on your shower you may need to switch to PINK Scrub or another scrubbing helper. This is a good indication you aren’t cleaning your shower often enough. If you have a rock floor in your shower you will need an iron brush to scrub this. You should not have pink or orange grout! Be sure to scrub the shower head, taps and drain as well. If you can, remove the drain and clean out the hair as well. Once you are done scrubbing the shower be sure to rinse the cleaner off the walls and floor. If you don’t have a removable shower head, a bucket and cloth will make this job easier for you. Then use your squeegee to get the water off the walls and floor. Use a dry cloth to shine everything up.
  8. Next is the bathtub. This will be the same process as the shower. Wet, spray, scrub, scrub, scrub, rinse, squeegee, and shine.
  9. Next move to the sink. Before you begin grab your stool and give the light fixtures a clean. They are probably dusty if you aren’t cleaning them regularly. Do not touch a wet cloth to a hot light bulb! Trust me, you will have exploding light bulbs.
  10. Once you have cleaned your light bulbs, grab your scrubbing tools and cleaner. Scrub out the sink including around the drain and taps with your scrub brush. Don’t forget the overflow drain. Once you are done, rinse the sink and use a dry cloth to shine up the taps.
  11. After the sink is cleaned, give the mirror a clean. You can use your squeegee if you have a nice one. If not just use water and a dry rag. If you are very particular about fuzzies and don’t have a nice squeegee you can use newspaper or you can buy microfiber cloths specifically for mirrors.
  12. If you have anything on the counter remove it and clean the counter underneath. Be sure to take everything off and clean the counter in full. As you place items back on the counter, organize them and clean them as you go. Don’t forget your soap dish or dispenser.
  13. Now wipe down the drawers, handles, cupboards or shelves underneath the sink. Take everything out from underneath and clean the cupboards out. Clean each item and organize before putting it back.
  14. Do not forget to clean things like floating shelves, scales, toilet paper holder, pictures, plunger, toilet brush holder and toothbrush holders. These will be different depending on what you have in your bathroom. If it’s in your bathroom, clean it!
  15. Make sure to clean the inside of the window, the window sills, frames and tracks if you have a window in your bathroom. If you want to clean the screen just remove the screen, rinse it in the shower before you clean the shower and then dry with a rag and replace. If it’s really greasy it may need to soak in the tub for a while. If you have blinds these need to be cleaned as well. Blinds are extremely time consuming. If they are very greasy it may be easiest to remove them and let them soak with some dish soap for a bit. If not just take a wet cloth and wipe slat by slat. You may go through more than one clean rag and more than one bucket of water depending on when you last cleaned your blinds.
  16. At this point you may have a lot of dirt on the floor again from the light fixtures, blinds and cupboards. Grab your vacuum and give the floor a quick vacuum again.
  17. Fill your bucket with warm water and PINK cleaner or other floor cleaner. Grab your knee pads and a wet and dry cloth. Scrub the floors by hand. Make sure to spend extra time around the bottom of the toilet and under the bathroom cabinet (if it has a space for that). Don’t forget behind the toilet as well.
  18. Now you are ready to clean the garbage can and replace it in the bathroom. Clean the inside and outside of the garbage can. If you don’t like to put a bag in your can then lining with newspaper can be a good option.
  19. Once your towels and bathmats are clean put them back in the bathroom. Your bathroom should be shining by now!

Now you know the secrets that professional cleaning companies use to make your bathroom look brand new again. Did anything surprise you? Let us know in the comments!
